President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has dispatched a high-level delegation to Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, to rally behind Nigeria’s women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, as they prepare to face Mali in the final of the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket tournament on Sunday.
The move highlights the administration’s commitment to supporting the team’s quest for a historic fifth consecutive continental title and seventh overall.
The delegation, led by Minister of Sports Development Senator John Owan Enoh, includes top government officials and Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) representatives.
Their presence at the Palais des Sports de Treichville aims to boost the team’s morale following their hard-fought 75-68 semi-final victory over Senegal on Saturday, which secured Nigeria’s fifth straight AfroBasket final berth and a spot in the 2026 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup qualifying tournaments.
President Tinubu, in a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, praised D’Tigress for their resilience, discipline, and team spirit.
“I have observed the qualities that have brought honour to our nation and earned respect for our players and coaches worldwide,” he said, singling out Head Coach Rena Wakama for her exceptional leadership.
“As the first female head coach, her experience continues to inspire D’Tigress to new heights,” he added.
Led by four-time AfroBasket champion Sarah Ogoke and veterans like Ezinne Kalu, D’Tigress aim to extend their dominance after defeating Senegal for the seventh consecutive time.
Coach Wakama expressed gratitude for the government’s backing, stating, “This support fuels our drive to make history again.”
As Nigeria anticipates a potential record-extending victory, the delegation’s presence signals strong national unity behind D’Tigress’s historic pursuit.
