Tinubu speaks on preferred Senate presidential candidate

The vice-president-elect, Kashim Shettima, has said his principal, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu does not have a preferred candidate for the Senate president’s seat.

POLITICS NIGERIA reports that Tinubu, represented by Shettima, disclosed this at the meeting with new senators-elect under the platform of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in Abuja on Monday.

A member-elect for Bungudu/Maru Federal Constituency of Zamfara State, Abdulmalik Bungudu, revealed this shortly after the meeting.

Bungudu, who spoke in the Hausa language, revealed that Tinubu told attendees that he had no preferred candidates for any of the principal offices of the 10th National Assembly.

He quoted Shettima as saying: “For now, he (Tinubu) said he doesn’t have anybody that he prefers to have as Senate President or Speaker, but consultations are going to continue to get the way out for the party and to also ensure the party emerges victorious in the forthcoming governorship and Houses of Assembly elections.”

This newspaper reports that some media reports had tipped the Southeast region to produce the next Senate president. Incumbent Senate Chief Whip and former governor of Abia State, Orji Uzor Kalu, is also reportedly favourite to land the role. Kalu and Tinubu have been friends for a long time.
