Former Governor of Niger State, Babangida Aliyu, has said President Bola Tinubu’s administration is making progress but lacks an effective communication strategy to inform Nigerians about its achievements.
Naija News reports that Aliyu, who is also the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Sir Ahmadu Bello Memorial Foundation (SABMF), made the remarks on Arise Television’s The Morning Show while reacting to discussions from a recent public accountability session held in Kaduna.
The forum, organised by SABMF, brought together federal ministers and top government officials to present the administration’s performance to northern stakeholders amid complaints of marginalisation from some political leaders in the region.
Aliyu said that public dissatisfaction with the Federal Government is not necessarily due to non-performance, but rather to poor communication.
He said, “What I understood from all the discussions we’ve had is that government officials are either shy or are not communicating well. You do not depend only on the Ministry of Information to be able to communicate with the citizens.
“Every minister, every head of parastatal should be able to tell the people what he’s been doing. We saw evidence that many parastatals have been doing very well, but people are not aware.
“With the cumulative problems of insecurity, kidnapping and poverty, the government’s approach has been dented. The government needs to be more of an advocate, very straightforward, and communicate properly with the people, not paying too much attention to political trends.”
Aliyu also defended northern leaders making demands from Tinubu’s administration, saying their expectations are justified based on the region’s support during the 2023 election.
He added, “Let the people understand what is happening on the ground. If, as we say, 63 to 64 percent of the vote came from the North, it is only logical that the North will be expecting so much from the government.
“But from what we have seen so far, the government is doing well; they just do not know how to communicate very well.”
