In a tragic incident at a youth hockey game on Monday, a father shot five members of his family, resulting in the deaths of two before turning the gun on himself.
According to WPRI, the man was the father of a senior at North Providence High School. He fatally shot the student’s mother and one sibling, as sources revealed. The remaining three family members were critically injured and are currently being treated at Rhode Island Hospital.
Pawtucket Police Chief Tina Goncalves mentioned that the tragedy seemed to originate from a “family dispute,” as reported by WNAC.
The game in progress featured boys teams from Coventry/Johnson and Blackstone Valley Co-op, according to the Providence Journal.
The Journal reported that a live-streaming service video captured the sound of approximately 13 shots fired within six seconds, followed by a solitary shot 11 seconds later. Though the shots occurred off-camera, the video depicted a moment of shock among spectators and athletes before they sought safety and rushed towards the exits.
“Today, our community experienced a terrible tragedy at Dennis M. Lynch Arena,” Pawtucket Mayor Donald Grebien said. “What should have been a joyful occasion, with dozens of families, students, and supporters gathered to celebrate Senior Night for the BVS (Blackstone Valley Schools) cooperative hockey team during a high school matchup against the Coventry–Johnston cooperative team, was instead marked by violence and fear.”
Officials said one of the victims of the shooting was pronounced dead at the scene, while four others were transported to a hospital, where one of them died, WNAC said.
The names of the victims and the killer have not been released.
