Troops bust illegal arms factory in Nasarawa

Troops of Joint Task Force Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS) operating in three states of Benue, Taraba and Nasarawa, on Monday, uncovered an illegal arms manufacturing facility in Agwatashi, Doma Local Government Area of Nasarawa State.
The troops also arrested one suspect and recovered locally fabricated pistols, cash and tools.
In a statement issued by Lieutenant Ahmad Zubairu, the Acting Media Information Officer, Headquarters JTF OPWS in Makurdi, the Benue State capital, the troops of Sector 2, stumbled on a concealed location suspected to be used for the illegal production of firearms. Zubairu noted that the discovery was made during a fighting and confidence-building patrol by troops deployed at Forward Operating Base (FOB) Idadu, as part of sustained operations to deny criminal elements freedom of action within the area. He stated that on sighting the patrol team, several individuals reportedly fled the scene.
However, one suspect, identified as Baba Ogar, a 26-year-old male from Arusu village in Kokona LGA of Nasarawa State, was apprehended while attempting to evade arrest by hiding on top of a tree.
He added that a search of the site led to the recovery of six locally fabricated pistols, assorted tools and equipment used in weapon production, N40,500 in cash, and a mobile phone found on the suspect.
He also stated that preliminary investigations revealed that the location served as an illegal arms factory supplying firearms to criminal elements within and outside the area, stressing that the suspect was currently in custody, while efforts have been intensified to track down other accomplices who escaped.
