Nigerian Army troops, in a coordinated operation with the Nigerian Air Force, neutralised a notorious bandit kingpin and rescued 76 kidnapped victims after raiding a major hideout in Katsina State on Thursday, August 22, 2025.
The operation, conducted in the Danmusa Local Government Area near the Katsina-Zamfara border, resulted in the death of one bandit leader, identified as Muhammadu Fulani, and the destruction of his camp, marking a significant blow to banditry in the region.
According to a statement by Katsina State Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Dr. Nasir Mu’azu, the operation was launched following credible intelligence about the hideout’s location in Jigawa Sawai.

Troops from the 17th Brigade, supported by an airstrike from the Air Force’s 213 Forward Operating Base, stormed the camp in a swift assault.
The intense bombardment forced the bandits to flee, leaving behind 76 captives who had been held for weeks.
“The chaos caused by the airstrike allowed the victims to escape in different directions, with many finding their way to safety,” Mu’azu said.
The rescued victims, comprising men, women, and children, were abducted during a series of raids, including a notable attack on Sayaya village in Matazu LGA on August 11, 2025.
Twelve of the freed hostages are receiving medical treatment at Matazu General Hospital, while 16 others are under care at the Army Forward Operating Base in Kaiga Malamai.
The operation also led to the recovery of several weapons, including AK-47 rifles and locally fabricated firearms, which were destroyed to prevent their reuse.
Governor Dikko Umaru Radda praised the security forces for their bravery, describing the raid as “a decisive step in our fight against rural banditry.” He reiterated his administration’s commitment to eradicating banditry, stating, “We will continue to support our troops to ensure Katsina becomes a safe haven for all.”
The governor also called on residents to provide timely intelligence to aid ongoing operations.
The operation follows a series of successful military actions in Katsina, including the neutralization of seven bandits in Kankara LGA on the same day, where four motorcycles were recovered.
However, the persistent banditry in Katsina, one of Nigeria’s worst-affected states, continues to challenge security efforts, with recent attacks claiming lives and displacing communities.
Commissioner Mu’azu assured residents that a quick-response Air Force wing remains deployed in Matazu and Bakori LGAs to maintain calm and support further rescue efforts.
