Donald Trump has said the only reason Iranians ‘are alive today’ is to negotiate, ahead of peace talks in Pakistan.
Writing on his Truth Social platform, the US President said: ‘The Iranians don’t seem to realise they have no cards, other than a short-term extortion of the World by using International Waterways. The only reason they are alive today is to negotiate! President DONALD J. TRUMP’.
His remarks come as Vice President JD Vance today warned Iran not to try and ‘play us’ as he set off to Pakistan for peace talks with Iran.
The Vice President is leading Trump’s delegation to Islamabad for talks with Iran on a possible end to the war in the Middle East.
But he warned his Iranian counterparts against underhand tactics. Speaking shortly before his departure to Pakistan from Joint Base Andrews in Maryland, Vance said: ‘If they’re gonna try to play us they’re gonna find the negotiating team is not going to be that receptive.
‘The President gave us some pretty clear guidelines.’
The White House has provided scant detail about the format of the talks – whether they will be direct or indirect – and has not provided specific expectations for the meeting.
