Trump declares Nigeria ‘country of particular concern’ over alleged Christian genocide

United States President Donald Trump has officially labeled Nigeria a “country of particular concern” following reports of widespread attacks targeting Christians in the country.

Trump made the announcement on Friday via his Truth Social account, a statement that was later shared on the White House’s X (formerly Twitter) page.

According to the U.S.-based Family Research Council, the “country of particular concern” designation is a formal classification under American law, usually determined by the Secretary of State. It applies to nations accused of severe violations of religious freedom or human rights.

In his post, Trump asserted:

> “Christianity is facing an existential threat in Nigeria. Thousands of Christians are being killed. Radical Islamists are responsible for this mass slaughter. I am hereby designating Nigeria a ‘country of particular concern.’”

He cited figures alleging that over 3,000 Christians had been killed in Nigeria and described the situation as a humanitarian crisis requiring urgent international attention.

> “When Christians, or any such group, are slaughtered like is happening in Nigeria—3,100 versus 4,476 worldwide—something must be done! I am asking Congressman Riley Moore, together with Chairman Tom Cole and the House Appropriations Committee, to immediately look into this matter and report back to me,” Trump added.

The U.S. President also affirmed that his administration is prepared to intervene against atrocities targeting Christians both in Nigeria and globally.

> “The United States cannot stand by while such atrocities are happening in Nigeria, and numerous other countries. We stand ready, willing, and able to save our great Christian population around the world!” he concluded.

Further clarification on the implications of Nigeria’s new designation is expected in the coming days.
