President Donald Trump of United States says he has filed a $15 billion lawsuit against The New York Times, accusing the paper of defamation, libel, and serving as a “mouthpiece” for the Democratic Party.
The lawsuit, filed Monday in a Tampa federal court, follows Trump’s threat last week to take action after the Times published articles linking him to a sexually suggestive note and drawing allegedly gifted to Jeffrey Epstein for his 50th birthday in 2003. Trump has denied any involvement.
Announcing the suit on Truth Social, Trump declared: “Today, I have the Great Honor of bringing a $15 Billion Dollar Defamation and Libel Lawsuit against The New York Times. The New York Times has been allowed to freely lie, smear, and defame me for far too long, and that stops, NOW!” He also criticized the paper for endorsing Kamala Harris in the 2024 presidential election.
Trump’s legal team claims the Times engaged in a “deliberate pattern of false, malicious, and defamatory reporting” that inflicted reputational injury worth billions. They are seeking at least $15 billion in damages.
The filing cites earlier lawsuits by Trump against other media giants, including ABC News, CBS News, and The Wall Street Journal, some of which, his lawyers argue, led to multimillion-dollar payouts or are still in court.
The Times has yet to respond publicly to the lawsuit.
