Udeze Backs Osimhen To Break AFCON Goal Drought Against Tunisia

Udeze Backs Osimhen To Break AFCON Goal Drought Against Tunisia

Former Nigeria defender Ifeanyi Udeze is confident that Victor Osimhen will soon silence doubts at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), tipping the striker to find the net when the Super Eagles face Tunisia on Saturday.

Osimhen drew blanks in Nigeria’s opening win over Tanzania, missing a handful of presentable chances and extending a frustrating personal record at the tournament.

He has now scored just once in nine AFCON appearances spread across three editions, a statistic that has continued to follow him despite his wider impact on games.

Udeze, however, insists there is no cause for alarm. He believes the goals will arrive once the striker settles, pointing to Osimhen’s sharp form outside the competition.

The forward has been prolific for Galatasaray this season, with 12 goals, and has also struck eight times for Nigeria in 2025.

“He didn’t score against Tanzania, but the goals will come,” Udeze told Footy-Africa.

“For me, it is not a problem. He just needs to keep his cool, and the goals will follow. He is a very good player and a natural goal machine.”

The former defender added that Osimhen’s reaction after the opener spoke volumes about his mentality.

“He was frustrated and angry that he didn’t score against Tanzania, but hopefully he scores against Tunisia and the goals start flowing,” he said.

Nigeria and Tunisia meet in a top-of-the-table Group clash at the 40,000-capacity Fez Stadium on Saturday. Both sides began their campaigns with victories, Tunisia edging Uganda, and another win would secure early passage to the round of 16.

Udeze expects a tight contest but believes Nigeria’s attacking threat, led by Osimhen, can make the difference if chances are taken.
