A US convoy was ambushed in Nigeria on Wednesday, resulting in the deaths of four people and the kidnapping of three others, according to CNN.
The attack occurred in the southeastern Anambra state, where two personnel from the US consulate and two police officers were killed, and three others were kidnapped.
The attackers also set fire to their bodies and vehicles.
The personnel who were killed were not US citizens, according to the White House and local police.
Separatists in the region have been escalating their attacks in recent years, with Nigerian officials often blaming the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra movement and its armed wing for the violence.
The south-east of Nigeria is just one of the many issues facing president-elect Bola Tinubu, who takes office later this month.
The military is also battling a jihadist insurgency in the north-east, gangs in the north-west and central states, and piracy in the Gulf of Guinea.
Attacks have been on the rise in recent weeks after a brief calm period during the February and March elections.
