March 17, (THEWILL) – Patrick Vieira, the former Arsenal legend, has been sacked from his position as the manager of Crystal Palace after being in charge for 20 months.
The Eagles are currently placed 12th in the English Premier League, only three points above the relegation zone. Although Vieira’s replacement has not been officially confirmed, former Southampton manager, Ralph Hasenhuttl and ex-Leeds boss, Jesse Marsch, are said to be the frontrunners.
Crystal Palace Chairman, Steve Parish, expressed his regret over the decision to let Vieira go, saying: “Ultimately, results in recent months have placed us in a precarious league position and we felt a change is necessary to give us the best chance of retaining Premier League status.”
Despite the club’s difficult position, Parish acknowledged Vieira’s contributions to the team, saying that he is held in the highest regard by himself and all of his colleagues. Vieira took over as the manager of Crystal Palace in July 2021, succeeding former England manager, Roy Hodgson. The team performed well in his first season, finishing in 12th place in the Premier League and making it to the FA Cup semi-finals.
However, this season did not go as planned, as the team won only one game since the World Cup in Qatar, resulting in a battle to avoid relegation. The sacking of Vieira was announced on March 17, which ironically happens to be St Patrick’s Day.
