By OLA MODUPE, Abeokuta –
In a dramatic turn during the Remo Federal Constituency by-election, Ogun State Police have apprehended two Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) officials and their driver for alleged electoral misconduct.
The arrests, confirmed in a statement by CSP Omolola Odutola, the Command’s Spokesperson, took place in Iperu Remo, Abeokuta, on Saturday, August 16, 2025.
According to Odutola, a police patrol team from the Iperu Remo Division intercepted a Mitsubishi Space Wagon (registration AKD 887 HT) at 12:45 a.m. with three occupants, including the INEC officials.
A search of the vehicle uncovered N2.5 million in cash in possession of one official.
“During questioning, the official admitted to collecting the money at Kehoy Hotel, Iperu, from an individual he called ‘Political Solution,’ following instructions from his supervisor,” Odutola disclosed.
Commissioner of Police Lanre Ogunlowo has directed that the suspects be moved to the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in Eleweran for a thorough probe.
“The Command is actively monitoring the election and will provide updates on the investigation’s outcome,” Odutola added, reassuring the public of transparency.
The incident has raised concerns about electoral integrity, with authorities vowing to clamp down on such violations.
Further details are awaited as the investigation unfolds.
