Activist Omoyele Sowore has criticised President Bola Tinubu over his assent to the Electoral Act 2026 (Amendment), alleging that the law is aimed at weakening free and credible elections in Nigeria.
Sowore, a former presidential candidate and publisher of Sahara Reporters, made the remarks in a post on X on Wednesday.
His words: “Tinubu has now signed the 2026 ‘Electoral Act,’ a law designed to undermine and ultimately forbid free, fair, and credible elections in Nigeria.
“We must resist this assault on democracy. They have dared the people. Now we must confront them, WE must damn their impunity.”
Tinubu signed the amended Electoral Act into law at the presidential villa in Abuja earlier on Wednesday.
The presidency and leaders of the National Assembly have said the amendment strengthens transparency, including provisions for electronic transmission of results and direct primaries by political parties.
