United States Defense Secretary, Pete Hegseth , has announced that the Department of War is preparing possible military action in Nigeria following reports of attacks on Christians.
Hegseth made the statement on Saturday via X, responding to former U.S. President Donald Trump’s warning of potential intervention over alleged persecution of Christians in Nigeria.

“Yes sir. The killing of innocent Christians in Nigeria — and anywhere — must end immediately. The Department of War is preparing for action. Either the Nigerian Government protects Christians, or we will kill the Islamic terrorists who are committing these horrible atrocities.”
Trump labels Nigeria CPC
Trump had on Friday listed Nigeria as a “ country of particular concern,” citing what he described as persistent violence against Christians and the government’s failure to safeguard religious minorities.
Meanwhile, the Nigerian government has denied allegations of religious persecution, insisting that no group is being targeted based on faith.
US troops to move into Nigeria
Trump reportedly expressed interest in “ taking decisive steps ” in Nigeria, suggesting that the U.S. could increase its presence in the region to “restore order and protect religious freedom.”
He claimed that if the Nigerian government fails to act swiftly to end the killings, his administration would not hesitate to intervene, adding that “America will always stand with the persecuted.”
