‘Why Yakubu Handed Over As INEC Chairman Before End Of Tenure’

‘Why Yakubu Handed Over As INEC Chairman Before End Of Tenure’

The longest-serving National Commissioner of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), May Agbamuche-Mbu, took over the leadership of the commission in an acting capacity on Tuesday.

Naija News understands that Agbamuche-Mbu was appointed as the acting chairman after Professor Mahmood Yakubu officially handed over the leadership of INEC.

The brief handover took place at the INEC headquarters in Abuja during a consultative meeting with Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs).

Meanwhile, fresh revelations suggest that Yakubu’s exit may have been hastened by the registration of new political parties under his watch.

According to Vanguard, the commission under Yakubu had already processed about a dozen registrations out of 110 applications for new political parties.

Yakubu reportedly viewed the move as part of his “end-game legacy” to expand Nigeria’s democratic space.

However, unknown to Yakubu, one of the newly registered parties was allegedly being positioned as a “fallback option” for a powerful politician hoping to contest the governorship of a state in the South-East geo-political zone.

The development, sources said, angered the sitting governor of the state, who rushed to Abuja to lodge a complaint.

By the end of last month, Yakubu was directed to commence his terminal exit and hand over to the most senior national commissioner.
