A woman suspected to be mentally ill has been rescued after delivering a baby girl by the roadside in Kwaita village, Kwali Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
The spokesperson of the FCT Police Command, SP Josephine Adeh, confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Sunday, noting that the command received a distress report from officers of the Rapid Response Squad during a routine patrol.
According to Adeh, the officers alerted authorities that an unidentified woman believed to be mentally unstable had given birth along the roadside.
She said the officer in charge of the Gender Unit at Kwali Division, alongside her team, swiftly mobilised to the scene following the report.
“The mother and her newborn were safely rescued and taken to General Hospital, Kwali, where they received medical attention and were later discharged in stable condition,” Adeh stated.
She added that the Welfare Officer of Kwali Area Council, Sadiq Kwali, was contacted in line with standard procedures.
Adeh also revealed that the Commissioner of Police in the FCT, CP Ahmed Mohammed Sanusi, commended the officers involved for their prompt response, professionalism, and compassion in handling the situation.
