WTD: Ogun Government’s Silence On World Teachers Day Holiday Worries Parents, Students

… ASUSS Confirms No Holiday

The rumoured declaration of tomorrow, October 6, 2025, as a holiday for teachers, in commemoration of the 2025 World Teachers’ Day celebration, may cause schools in Ogun State to experience low attendance by pupils and students.

The 2025 World Teachers’ Day was celebrated by teachers in the state at the M.K.O Sports Arena in Kuto, Abeokuta, the state capital.

Coincidentally, the 2024 edition of the  World Teachers Day was also celebrated on a Sunday, and the state government declared Monday, October 6, 2024, a public holiday.

However, Comrade Felix Agbesanwa, the Ogun state Chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Secondary Schools (ASUSS), in an online interview with Daily Independent, confirmed that schools will reopen on Monday, October 6, 2025.

According to a Daily Independent survey, many students may opt to stay away from school tomorrow due to the government’s silence.

However, Governor Dapo Abiodun, who was represented at the WTD rally by Engineer Naimot Salako, the Deputy Governor, was silent on the purported public holiday for teachers.

The Governor, in a statement on Sunday, praised teachers for their commitment, patience, and dedication in shaping the future of children across the state.

“Today, as the world marks World Teachers’ Day, we join millions around the globe to celebrate and honour our teachers. They are true nation builders whose knowledge, patience, and commitment continues to shape the future of our children and our dear state.

Abiodun pointed out the state’s efforts to revitalise education, which include upgrading school infrastructure, improving teachers welfare, promoting digital learning, and encouraging continuous professional development.

“In Ogun State, we are proud of the progress we have achieved together in revitalizing education.

From upgrading school infrastructure and enhancing teachers’ welfare, to promoting digital learning and continuous professional development, we remain committed to creating an environment where teaching is both impactful and rewarding, as stated by the governor.

He saluted educators across the state and Nigeria for their selfless service and reiterated his administration’s commitment to supporting them.

In that same spirit, Prof. Abayomi Arigbabuwo, the Commissioner For Education, Science and Technology, in a special message to teachers via his Facebook account, stated that the government values their contributions in nurturing children in the classrooms.

“We want to nurture the leaders that we envision for this nation, leaders that can contribute to national development, leaders that can raise the bar for this nation as we reflect on the theme for this year’s teachers’ day which is requesting teaching for collaborative practice.

“I hope you will rebrand yourself, re-engineer what you do in the classrooms and retool yourself so that you can help us to produce the type of leaders that we envision for this nation,” the Commissioner stated via his social media handle.
