Youths protest the shooting of a man by security forces in Anambra state

An unidentified man was shot dead by security forces in the Ojidi community of Idemiri North local government , Anambra State.

Some in the community accused vigilantes of being responsible for shooting the victim, while others claimed that State Department officials pulled the trigger that killed the man.

It was gathered that the suspect, identified simply as China and being pursued by security guards, came across his home as the victim was at home preparing to visit his wife who had just given birth to a baby.

It was pointed out that while trying to arrest the suspect, one of the police officers opened fire and a stray bullet knocked over the victim.

Witnesses, who spoke anonymously to reporters for security reasons, said the incident was followed by a series of protests in the area as youths from the community took the body to the local government office to voice their grievances about the development.

Protesters also insisted on meeting the chairman, but were barred by soldiers, so they blocked the entrance to the Secretariat with a dead body.

A source said: “An innocent man was shot dead by DSS officers this morning. Security agents were looking for a cultist who came across the deceased’s estate. The man had just woken up and they were trying to pray.

However, he allowed himself to urinate outside, and the next thing that happened was the sound of a gunshot.

“I heard security forces claim they thought they shot the man they were pursuing. The dead man didn’t even know anyone had come across his property.

“He came out to urinate, but was hit by a bullet before returning to his family for morning prayer. He also planned to visit his wife, who gave birth early in the morning. He had not even seen the newborn baby. He is the only son of his parents. “

The state police spokesman, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the incident and said law and order had been restored in the area.

“The deputy police commissioner in charge of operations directed agents to his Ogidi community after his members protested that a member of the security forces had shot and killed one of the community’s indigenous people.

In the meantime, security has been restored and the suspects arrested with arms retrieved . Details will be shared,” Ikega said.
