Zamfara mine collapse: FG deploys rescue operations

Obi mourns site victims, urges stricter regulation

The Ministry of Solid Minerals Development, yesterday, disclosed deployment of federal mines officers to lead rescue operations at a mining pit that collapsed in Kadauri Village, Maru Local Council of Zamfara State.

This was contained in a statement signed by the Special Assistant on Media to the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Segun Tomori.

He stressed that relevant departments of the ministry had been mobilised to aid rescue operations and unearth the circumstances leading to the incident.”

Meanwhile, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi, has mourned victims of the mining pit collapse, describing the incident as a national tragedy that highlights Nigeria’s weak regulatory framework in the solid minerals sector.

In a statement yesterday, on his X, Obi said he was deeply saddened by the collapse.

He, however, extended condolences to the families of the victims while praising local rescue efforts.
