September 12, (THEWILL) — Borno State Governor, Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum, has inaugurated a 48-classroom integrated learning High Islamic College in Baga, Kukawa Local Government Area.
The school, unveiled on Friday, is designed to provide almajirai with a second chance at balanced education, combining modern formal learning with Islamic studies and vocational training.
Zulum said the initiative was a crucial part of his administration’s efforts to tackle illiteracy and insecurity through youth empowerment.
Governor said: “We will introduce Mathematics and English so that the non-formal education system can be streamlined with the formal system.
“We will ensure they receive quality education that can qualify them to sit for JAMB and gain admission into tertiary institutions in Nigeria.”
The governor expressed satisfaction with the enrollment drive in Baga, adding that his administration would provide daily meals to encourage retention.
“This project is part of our commitment to transforming the lives of millions of out-of-school children by giving them literacy and numeracy skills to contribute to the development of Borno State,” Zulum noted.
The school in Baga is one of about 20 similar integrated institutions established by the state government.
Commissioner for Education, Science, Technology and Innovation, Engr. Lawan Abba Wakilbe, said free uniforms, books, and learning materials had been provided.
“About 300 uniforms have been distributed so far, but the demand here exceeds 500. More uniforms, books, dignity kits and bags will be supplied. All items are given free,” he said.
He added that 23 community-based teachers had been engaged.
The inauguration was witnessed by Rep. Bukar Talba; Member of the House of Assembly for Kukawa, Karta Maina Ma’Aji; Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Prof. Usman Tar; Commissioner for Local Government and Emirates Affairs, Sugun Mai Mele; Permanent Secretary, Government House, Mustapha Ali Busuguma; Executive Secretary, BOGIS, Engr. Adam Bababe, and other senior government officials.
