Dončić Commits To Los Angeles Lakers With Three-Year 5m Extension

August 02, (THEWILL) — The Los Angeles Lakers have confirmed Luka Dončić’s three-year, $165m contract extension, securing the Slovenian guard’s future with the franchise until 2028. The deal, finalised on Saturday, ensures Dončić remains a cornerstone of the Lakers’ roster after his arrival in February 2025. The 26-year-old started all 28 regular-season games for the team, averaging 32.4 points, 9.1 rebounds, and 9.8 assists per game.

Dončić expressed his gratitude to the organisation, teammates, and fans, stating: “This is an amazing organisation, and I truly believe in what we’re building together.” He emphasised his commitment to bringing another championship to Los Angeles, calling the extension “just the beginning” of his ambitions with the Lakers. The deal removes any possibility of him entering free agency in 2026.

Rob Pelinka, Lakers President of Basketball Operations, described the agreement as a “monumental moment” for the franchise. He praised Dončić’s “transcendent” talent and leadership, underlining the guard’s importance to the team’s long-term plans. The extension follows a strong finish to the 2024/2025 season, where Dončić helped the Lakers clinch a playoff berth despite joining mid-season.

Since his trade from the Dallas Mavericks, Dončić has quickly adapted to the Lakers’ system, forming a formidable partnership with Anthony Davis. His playmaking and scoring have revitalised the team’s offence, making them a competitive force in the Western Conference.

The extension signals the Lakers’ intent to build a championship-contending roster around their new superstar. With Dončić’s future settled, the Lakers can now focus on strengthening the supporting cast ahead of the 2025/2026 season.
