Three injured as diesel tanker catches fire in multiple vehicle crash on Apapa-Oshodi Expressway

A major accident on Sunday afternoon caused panic along the busy Apapa-Oshodi Expressway, Iyana-Isolo axis, when a diesel-laden tanker went up in flames after colliding with several vehicles. Three people sustained serious injuries, though no lives were lost.

The incident, which occurred around 1:00 p.m., involved a tanker transporting 45,000 litres of diesel from Apapa toward Oshodi. The tanker reportedly rammed into a commercial minibus before being struck by two trailers — one a flatbed truck and the other carrying a 40-foot container. The impact immediately sparked a fire outbreak.

Eyewitnesses said the blaze spread rapidly, but emergency responders arrived in time to prevent further casualties.

Controller General of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Margaret Adeseye, confirmed the incident, noting that prompt intervention by firefighters helped to contain the situation.

According to her, “The emergency call was received at 13:05hrs through the Isolo and Bolade Fire Stations, which immediately deployed personnel and equipment to the scene. A preliminary investigation attributes the incident to the collision involving the diesel tanker and the commercial minibus, which narrowly escaped without casualties, before the subsequent involvement of the trailers. Firefighting operations were swiftly carried out, with the fire successfully extinguished and mop-up operations completed to ensure the safety of the motoring public. Three individuals sustained varying degrees of injuries in the incident and have been taken to a nearby hospital for medical attention.”

Adeseye further appealed to road users to exercise patience and comply with safety regulations to avert such tragedies in the future.

Meanwhile, the wreckage of the tanker and other affected vehicles was cleared to restore the free flow of traffic on the busy expressway.
