September 09, (THEWILL) — The Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) has suspended its strike following an agreement with the management of Dangote Refinery on workers’ unionisation rights.
The union had downed tools in protest against the refinery’s alleged refusal to allow employees to join NUPENG.
After a conciliation meeting convened on Tuesday in Abuja by the Minister of Labour and Employment, Mohammad Dingyadi, both parties signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).
The MoU was signed by Dangote Refinery’s Managing Director, Sayyu Dantata; Otunba Jibrin; Benson Upah for the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC); Prince Williams Akporeha and Afolabi Olawale for NUPENG; Nuhu Toro for the Trade Union Congress (TUC); O.K. Ukoha for the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA); and Falonipe Amos for the Ministry of Labour and Employment.
Under the agreement, NUPENG resolved to suspend the strike with immediate effect, paving the way for continued engagement on workers’ rights and welfare at the refinery.
Acting General Secretary of the NLC, Benson Upah, described the deal as a milestone.
“Unionisation is not a privilege but a fundamental right. Nigerian workers at the Dangote Refinery will no longer be treated as outsiders in their own industry,” he said.
