The Lagos police command says it has arrested Samsideen
Oladiti, one of the leaders of the National Union of Road Transport Workers
(NURTW) in the city, over alleged murder and assault.
In a statement on Friday signed by Babasayi Oluseyi, deputy
police public relations officer, the command relayed that the suspect,
popularly known as ‘Shamelon’, is being held at the State Criminal
Investigation Department (SCID), Panti, Yaba.
“The suspect is currently in the custody of the State
Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Panti-Yaba, for discreet
investigation,” the statement reads.
According to the police, the 55-year-old suspect allegedly
attacked a dispatch rider around 3pm on September 17, using a helmet and his
fists to inflict severe injuries.
Oluseyi said the victim was placed on oxygen and is
receiving treatment in hospital.
He noted that a day later, another complaint linked the
suspect to an August 28 incident, in which he allegedly struck a man repeatedly
with a metallic ring.
Oluseyi said despite medical treatment, the victim died on
September 17, and that his body has been deposited for autopsy.
He noted that the victim’s death sparked a protest at the
suspect’s office in Sandgrouse Market, where sympathisers set two motorcycles
ablaze.
Olohundare Jimoh, Lagos commissioner of police, led officers
to restore calm and assured residents that the suspect would be prosecuted.
Jimoh urged the public to remain calm and to “avoid taking
the law into their hands”.
