KENYA: Junet Assures Ruto, ‘Somali Numbers Will Decide 2027 Elections’

Suna East MP Junet Mohamed has pledged the Somali community’s support for President William Ruto ahead of the 2027 general election.

Junet said some leaders feel uneasy about the President’s close ties with the Somali community, but he urged Ruto to ignore such criticism.

He praised the Somali community for its strength and significant contribution to Kenya’s economic growth.

“In our country, people have different opinions. One of the problems you are facing is that you are working with this community. There are people in this country who are not happy with your relationship with the Somali community, Mr President. The Somali people are hardworking, people who do their businesses and generate a lot in the economy. They contribute so much to the GDP of this country,” Junet said on Saturday during a fundraiser in aid of Islamic institutions in Mandera County.

“Don’t listen to naysayers who are telling you that you should not work with this community. The Somali community is a strong one, and from what I’m seeing, in 2027, the numbers of the Somali community will determine the coming elections.”

Junet also assured President Ruto of the Somali community’s full support for the broad-based government, promising to help deliver on its development agenda.

“The way things are moving, we shall reach 2027 together, God-willing,” he said.

Junet also defended the Somali community against critics questioning its growing political influence, stressing that the community remains committed to national progress.

At the same event, President Ruto reiterated the government’s pledge to education, referring to it as the bedrock of opportunity and development. The fundraiser brought together leaders, scholars, and members of the Somali community in a show of support for education and empowerment initiatives.

“The more education is made accessible to our children, the more empowered, equal and prosperous we become. We applaud the Eltabashi Educational Trust’s dedication to supporting vulnerable children in Northern Kenya to access education,” Ruto said.
