September 26, (THEWILL) — Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s speech at the 80th United Nations General Assembly in New York on Friday was overshadowed by a mass walkout by delegates.
The exodus began as Netanyahu took the podium for the annual general debate, with representatives from predominantly Arab and Muslim nations leading the protest. Delegates from several African and European countries also joined the walkout.
The protest underscored the growing international opposition to Israel’s stance on the Gaza conflict, which is approaching its second anniversary.
On the sidelines of the UNGA, countries including Australia, Britain, Canada, and France formally recognised Palestine, signalling renewed support for a two-state solution.
Netanyahu, however, dismissed the move, insisting that such recognition rewarded terrorism. “Their recognition of Palestine tells Hamas that murdering Jews pays off,” he declared during his address.
