Biokpo Spot Kick Delivers Rivers United Victory Over Niger Tornadoes

October 01, (THEWILL) — Rivers United defeated Niger Tornadoes 1-0 at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium in Port Harcourt on Wednesday. The victory extended their unbeaten start to six matches in the 2025/2026 Nigerian Professional Football League season. Maclyn Biokpo’s penalty settled the Matchday 6 contest, lifting Stanley Eguma’s side to one point behind third-placed Enyimba International.

The first half ended goalless despite Rivers United’s control. Midfielders Chinedu Sunday and Emmanuel Nnaji pressed forward, but Niger Tornadoes goalkeeper Mustapha Ibrahim denied them. Abdul Maikaba’s visitors countered through forward Terdoo Shimagande without testing Favour Oneya.

Biokpo converted a penalty five minutes into the second half after a handball in the box. The assistant referee signalled the infringement, and the striker calmly beat Ibrahim. His third league goal this campaign shifted momentum to the hosts.

Niger Tornadoes chased an equaliser late on. Substitutes Rickson Mendos and Godstime combined for a headed chance in the 85th minute that went wide. Rivers United brought on Wisdom Samuel and Samson Obi to defend their lead through three minutes of added time.

The win maintains Rivers United’s strong home form this season. They face Enyimba next with the hope of preserving their unbeaten streak. Niger Tornadoes remain without an away victory and will host Kun Khalifa in their next fixture.
