Alba Confirms Retirement From Professional Football At Season’s End

October 07, (THEWILL) — Inter Miami defender Jordi Alba has confirmed he will retire from professional football when the Major League Soccer campaign concludes.

The 36-year-old Spanish left-back signed a contract extension in May that would have kept him at the Florida club until 2027, but he revealed in a social media post on Tuesday that he had decided to call time on his playing days.

Alba began his senior career at Valencia in 2009 before earning a move to Barcelona three years later, shortly after helping Spain claim the 2012 European Championship.

He spent a decade at the Camp Nou, establishing himself among the world’s elite at his position. In 2023 he reunited with Lionel Messi at Inter Miami, where he remained a leading performer despite his advancing years.

The veteran full-back has featured in 44 matches for Miami across all competitions in 2025, contributing seven goals and 11 assists.

His performances this season reinforced his status as one of the league’s finest defenders. Alba departs professional football with 22 major trophies to his name.

In his statement, Alba said the decision came with complete conviction and peace of mind.

He wrote, “I have decided to bring my professional career to an end at the conclusion of the season.

“I feel I have walked this path with every ounce of passion possible.”

Alba follows former Barcelona teammate Sergio Busquets in announcing his departure from the game in recent weeks.

He added, “Today, I close this chapter knowing I have given it my all. Football has been, is and always will be an essential part of my life.”
