A mourner who tragically lost her life during the viewing of late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s remains on Friday, October 17 has been identified as Josephine Akeng’o.
Ms Akeng’o, a mother of three was among two people who died in a stampede at the viewing held at Nyayo Stadium in Nairobi. Lobby group Vocal Africa CEO Hussein Khalid confirmed her identity at city mortuary on Tuesday.
“Our team @VOCALAfrica_ is presently at city mortuary following up on the Kasarani 3 who were shot and killed last week on Thursday during the viewing of Baba’s body. While here, we have confirmed that two others died on Friday at Nyayo stadium.
“One has been identified as Ms Josephine Akeng’o (pictured below). She has left behind 3 children. The second Nyayo stadium victim is yet to be identified,” Hussein Khalid tweeted.
Atleast three other people died after police fired gunshots and tear gas to disperse mourners at Kasarani stadium on Thursday. Unconfirmed reports indicate that a fourth person also died as officers tried to disperse the surging crowds.
Authorities reported that 163 others were injured in the chaos, with at least 34 of them being referred to the hospital for further treatment. Acording to police reports, the stampede happened near Gate five when a crowd surged, causing a stampede.
MSF East Africa confirmed that they and other service providers treated 163 patients at Nyayo Stadium and referred 34.
“On October 16, during the public viewing of the body of the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga in Nairobi, MSF teams working alongside other responders provided emergency medical care at Parliament Buildings and Kasarani Sports Centre. A total of 40 patients were treated via ambulance services,” MSF said in a statement.
“On October 17, at the Nyayo Stadium field hospital, the multi-agency teams attended to 163 patients and referred 34 others for further care. Most injuries involved blunt trauma and fractures. Tragically, 2 lives were lost in the stampede that occurred today.”
