Twelve more people were Thursday arrested across the country as authorities tighten the crackdown on exam malpractices during the ongoing KCSE examinations.
The new arrests took place in Nairobi and Migori counties, while other cheating cases were reported in Kisii, Nyamira, and West Pokot, which have led to the detention of several invigilators, supervisors, and teachers.
According to reports from security officers and Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) officials, cases were detected at Kenya Muslim Academy in Huruma (Nairobi), Ugari Mixed Secondary School in Migori, and Itumbe D.O.K Secondary School in Kisii County.
In Nairobi, police arrested a university student impersonating a KCSE candidate. Investigations showed the suspect was hired at Ksh20,000 to sit the exam on behalf of a student. Five invigilators, the centre manager, and the supervisor were also arrested in connection with the incident.
In Migori, police detained two Board of Management teachers, a centre manager, and a supervisor over similar cheating allegations.
The arrests come amid a renewed government effort to protect the integrity of the national exams. Education Cabinet Secretary Migos Ogamba reaffirmed that the ministry will not tolerate exam irregularities.
“I continue to warn Kenyans, please allow the students to sit the exams. For instance, there are cases in Nairobi where five or so people were arrested impersonating the student, when we have indicated that this year’s papers are individualised with actual photos of students. So when you send someone else, they will be caught,” said the CS.
Despite the warnings, early exposure cases continue to emerge. In Nyamira County, police and KNEC officers arrested all invigilators and supervisors at Itembe D.O.K Secondary School after Chemistry Paper 2 surfaced online before the exam began. The leaked papers had security features confirming they were meant for the school.
Officers seized 11 mobile phones, and those arrested have since recorded statements.
Additional cheating incidents have also been reported in West Pokot, Kisii, and Nyakach, bringing the total number of arrests since Monday to 27 nationwide.
