The Ghana Police Service has confirmed the arrest of Evans Eshun, popularly known as Ebo Noah, a self-styled prophet whose prediction of an imminent world-ending flood sparked widespread panic and controversy across social media platforms.
Eshun was taken into custody as part of an ongoing nationwide crackdown on cyber-related activities, particularly the spread of false information capable of causing public fear, disorder, or economic disruption. Police authorities say the arrest followed intelligence-led investigations into online broadcasts and messages attributed to the cleric.
Ebo Noah had recently gained viral attention after releasing prophetic messages warning of a catastrophic global flood, urging followers to prepare for the “end of the world.” The prophecy circulated widely online, drawing sharp criticism from religious leaders, civil society groups, and security agencies, who warned that such claims could incite panic among vulnerable populations.
According to police sources, the arrest is not an attack on religious belief, but a response to alleged violations of Ghana’s laws governing cybercrime, public safety, and misinformation. Investigators are examining whether the prophet’s online activities breached statutes related to the publication of false news, fear-mongering, or misuse of digital platforms.
“The Ghana Police Service respects freedom of worship and expression,” a police spokesperson said, “but will not tolerate actions—religious or otherwise—that threaten public order or exploit citizens through fear.”
The case has reignited debate in Ghana over the limits of prophetic pronouncements, the responsibility of religious figures in the digital age, and the role of the state in regulating online religious content without infringing on fundamental freedoms.
