In a deeply emotional interview, Saida Adeshina, the mother of late Nigerian singer Destiny Boy (real name Afeez Adeshina), has broken her silence about her son’s tragic death at age 22 and addressed swirling online rumours surrounding the circumstances of his passing.
Saida insisted her son did not die from money rituals, dismissing viral speculation tying his death to occult practices after a resurfaced Instagram post and social-media chatter suggested otherwise. “My son didn’t do any money ritual,” she stated emphatically, warning that anyone using his name to trend would “suffer the same fate” as him.
According to Saida, Destiny Boy had been secretly battling a serious and mysterious medical condition called “Oku oru,” which caused repeated seizure-like attacks over the past two years — a struggle the family hid from the public due to his star status. She explained that the illness would strike suddenly, making him stiff and disoriented, and even after trying numerous treatments, there was no lasting improvement.
The mother revealed that soon after the birth and naming of his first child, Destiny Boy and his father met a traditional healer named Edun Ifayomi, who had supported them financially during earlier hospital treatments and had even given a ram for the naming ceremony. The singer collapsed shortly afterward, and despite various treatments from hospitals to pastors and herbalists the ailment persisted.
She recounted a painful sequence of events shortly before his death: Destiny was taken back to Ifayomi’s house for help. Although she could not join immediately due to business commitments, she kept in touch by phone. Days later, after repeated calls went unanswered, she was summoned back as his seizures returned. By the time she reached the hospital, she was told her son had passed away.
While Saida’s account emphasizes health struggles, police in Ogun State have also launched an official investigation into the singer’s death, transferring the case to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) and arresting one suspect as part of ongoing inquiries. Authorities have not yet released an official cause of death, fueling further public debate.
Amid the controversy, Destiny Boy’s sister also took to social media to debunk ritual theories, strongly asserting that her brother did not die at a herbalist’s house nor as part of any ritual, and even suggesting the possibility that he was poisoned claims that have yet to be verified.
The late Afrofuji star first rose to fame after his Fuji-style cover of Davido’s “If” went viral in 2019, earning him a growing fan base. He is survived by his partner Iremide and their son, born in November 2024.
Destiny Boy’s passing has sparked national grief, legal scrutiny, and intense online speculation but his family is now urging Nigerians to respect the truth and let the formal investigation run its course.
