President William Ruto on Thursday, January 29, unveiled a new funding initiative aimed at empowering 90,000 Kenyan youths who did not complete their formal education.
Speaking during the Nyota Capital Disbursement event in Kisii, Ruto said the government will provide each beneficiary with Ksh36,000 to acquire practical skills that can help them earn an income. He said the programme would officially launch on the Hustler Fund platform last evening. Youths who have already qualified for the Nyota Fund will not be eligible for this new scheme.
“We are opening a platform on *254#. We are looking for 90,000 youth, whom we want to equip with skills. We will support you with Ksh36,000 to attend a course and also pay for your exams so that you can get certificates to show that you have the skills to help you in life,” Ruto stated.
The President encouraged unemployed youth interested in trades such as electrical work, plumbing, carpentry, masonry, and other hands-on skills to take advantage of the opportunity.
Ruto also highlighted the government’s ongoing efforts to secure jobs for Kenyan youth abroad through the National Employment Authority Integrated Management System.
“We have opportunities in the United Kingdom and the Middle East. Go and check the platform, and if you do not have money to pay for the ticket, the government will fund you as long as you will repay the money once you have settled,” he explained.
Addressing concerns about the legitimacy of the Nyota Fund, Ruto dismissed claims that it is a scam. He assured applicants that once approved, funds would be deposited into “Pochi la Biashara” accounts, which separate business funds from personal money.
Meanwhile, local leaders pledged support for the initiative. Kisii Governor Simba Arati announced waivers for business licenses for ventures launched by Nyota Programme beneficiaries. Nyamira County Governor Amos Nyaribo declared that beneficiaries from his county will enjoy a five-year exemption from fees.
This initiative forms part of the government’s broader strategy to equip young Kenyans with marketable skills, enhance employment opportunities, and foster entrepreneurship across the country.
