KENYA: Bomas Complex Misses Deadline for Africa–France Summit Despite Multi-Billion Upgrade

The National Assembly Committee on Tourism and Wildlife has confirmed that the Bomas of Kenya will not be ready to host the 2026 Africa–France Partnerships for Innovation and Growth Summit.

During an inspection tour of the facility, which is currently undergoing extensive renovations, committee members learned that the construction schedule will not meet the requirements for the two-day summit scheduled for May 11–12. Tourism Principal Secretary John Ololtuaa briefed the team, led by Vice-Chairperson Bedzimba Rashid, explaining that the ongoing facelift simply cannot be completed before the international delegates arrive.

Despite the missed deadline, the committee offered a positive assessment of the work currently underway. Vice-Chairperson Rashid noted that while the timeframe was a setback, the quality of the reconstruction remains high. He stated:

“Our inspection has established that the works will not be completed within the stipulated timeframe. The Committee is satisfied that there is value for money in the project, which is aimed at transforming Bomas into a world-class facility.”

Lawmakers have reaffirmed their support for the government’s ambitious plan to transform the historic site into the Bomas International Convention Centre (BICC). Pledging to maintain strict oversight, the committee aims to ensure the prudent use of public funds throughout the project’s lifecycle. Member of Parliament Khamis Chome noted that relocating the Africa–France summit was a practical necessity, as it allows the multi-billion shilling project to proceed without the risks associated with rushed implementation.

“Changing the venue for the summit from Bomas was a pragmatic decision that will ensure the multi-billion project is implemented without pressure,” he said.

This comes days after the government shared that construction teams are working around the clock to meet a May opening, following the project’s commencement in March 2025.

Recent progress photos shared by Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo on April 20 show that the main structure of the KSh 31.5 billion complex is largely complete. The building’s distinctive wide, overhanging roof is currently receiving its final technical finishing layers, while large tower cranes and steady fleets of cement trucks remain active on-site to keep the project on its intensive schedule.

Inside the facility, specialists are focusing on the finer architectural details, including the installation of glass façades and sophisticated interior acoustic systems. These halls must meet international standards to host an anticipated 11,000 delegates next month.

Infrastructure and Security Upgrades
Beyond the main convention complex, significant work continues on the surrounding transport network to handle future traffic demands. Foundation works are currently underway for the Bomas Ring Road and new access routes from Lang’ata Road, which will streamline movement for visitors and residents alike.

Simultaneously, the State Department for Internal Security and National Administration is preparing the facility for high-level operations. These preparations include the installation of secure event management systems, advanced traffic coordination tools, and smart surveillance technology.

These integrated systems will ensure that the BICC operates as a secure, world-class hub for international diplomacy and commerce.
