March 09, (THEWILL) – Erik ten Hag has praised Manchester United centre-back, Lisandro Martinez, hailing him as a “sublime” defender and revealing his desire to work with him for a “long time.”
Ten Hag has already managed Martinez for almost four years, having signed him for Ajax from Argentine club, Defensa y Justicia, in 2019 for €7m. Martinez quickly became a key player for Ajax, featuring prominently in the UEFA Champions League before moving to Manchester United in a deal worth up to £57m.
Despite initial doubts about his suitability for the Premier League, Martinez has since established himself as one of the league’s top defenders, earning the nickname “The Butcher” for his aggressive style of play.
Speaking about Martinez, Ten Hag said, “It’s extraordinary to work with him…His attitude – everyone loves it, the fans love it, the defence loves it, and it gives spirit to the team.” He added that Martinez’s playing style is “tough but not unfair” and praising as “sublime” his positioning, anticipation, and cooperation on the ball.
Ten Hag expressed his hope that they can continue to work together for a long time. In a season where Manchester United has struggled with inconsistency, Martinez has been a bright spot, with his solid defending and tenacious approach helping to shore up the team’s backline.
