Kate Middleton Faces Off In a Game of Rock-Paper-Scissors While Visiting Wales

Shaking hands and taking selfies, offering smiles and hugs, Kate Middleton is always generous with the public. The rain that pounded the streets of Newtown on Thursday, February 26 didn’t stop her and husband Prince William from interacting with the Welsh for twenty-five minutes, according to the BBC. With daffodils—the country’s symbolic flower—on their coats and umbrellas in hand, the Prince and Princess of Wales strolled through the crowds and shook hands. According to the BBC, this stroll was not on the agenda for the day’s visit to East Wales, but the Prince and Princess stopped their car to meet the public, who were waiting in spite of the downpour.

During this impromptu stopover, the Princess of Wales was challenged to a game of rock-paper-scissors by a little boy, as witnessed by a video shared on X by journalist Emily Ferguson. In the clip, Middleton is seen winning the first round. “Let’s do it again,” she then encourages her young opponent. A second boy joins them, and they play four games, until the princess fails, defeated by the “scissors” of her opponent, whom she promptly congratulates on his victory.

Kate and William traveled to Wales in the run-up to St. David’s Day, the national holiday, celebrated on March 1, to see the work of local communities. Their visit to Newtown included a tour of the town’s hanging gardens and a stop at an art gallery offering creative workshops for children. During this visit, the Princess of Wales was presented with a pearl necklace by a little girl, which Middleton tied around her own neck.

Prince William and his wife are no strangers to Wales, having moved there after their wedding in April 2010. The newlyweds made their home in a cottage overlooking the island of Anglesey, where they stayed until 2013, during which time the future king was a rescue pilot for the Royal Air Force. “This island was our first home together, and it will always be a very special place for both of us,” Prince William said in a speech the year they left Anglesey. “Catherine and I look forward to returning regularly with our family in the years to come. I know I speak for Catherine when I say that I have never known a place as beautiful and welcoming as Anglesey.”

However, the loneliness of their island life took its toll on Middleton, then Duchess of Cambridge. “It was so isolated, so cut off from the world. I had no family around me, and he worked nights. If only I’d had a center like this,” she told volunteers at a center for parents and children during a visit to Cardiff in 2020, according to Hello . The couple and their three children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis, now reside at Forest Lodge, a charming manor house in Windsor Park. The red-brick residence is located in the county of Berkshire, where the entire Middleton clan has settled, and not far from Windsor Castle, where King Charles III and Queen Camilla regularly stay.
