Former Ekiti State governor, Ayodele Fayose, has defended his support for President Bola Tinubu, insisting that such a stance does not amount to anti-party activity despite his membership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
“We must not say because it’s our party member that must win when we know our party member has no capacity,” Fayose made the remarks on Sunday while speaking at the PDP national convention held in Abuja.
The former Governor maintained that backing a candidate outside one’s party does not necessarily amount to anti-party activity.
Fayose argued that political support must be guided by competence rather than blind loyalty to party lines.
He questioned the rationale behind supporting candidates solely on the basis of party affiliation, especially when questions exist about their capacity to lead.
“Would you compare a Makinde with an Asiwaju?” he queried, suggesting that leadership ability should outweigh partisan considerations.
Fayose further emphasised that national interest must always come before party loyalty, describing political differences as a normal feature of democracy.
“Nigeria is for all of us, you are first an Ekiti man before you become a political party card bearer. All the former governors are behind the current governor,” he said.
Further defending his stance, Fayose insisted that his support for Tinubu does not violate party principles, noting that democracies around the world accommodate differing political views.
“Obama is not supporting the Democrats, the former president is not supporting Trump, have they expelled them? No, democracy will have those differences on national issues,” he stated.
