Nigeria signed off the 24th African Athletics Championships on a high as the women’s 4x400m relay team powered to gold on the final day, lifting the country to 12 medals overall.
Esther Okon, Toheebat Jimoh, Jecinter Lawrence and Patience Okon-George produced a commanding display to defend the title in 3:29.25 on Sunday, finishing well clear of Ethiopia and Kenya.
The Nigerian quartet controlled the race from the opening leg and crossed the line almost 30 metres ahead, sealing the nation’s fourth gold of the championships.
Team Nigeria concluded the competition with four gold, five silver, and three bronze medals, finishing fourth behind Kenya, South Africa, and Ethiopia in the standings. Kenya topped the table with 17 medals, including six gold, while South Africa also claimed six gold medals and Ethiopia secured five.
The country’s other medal on the final day came from Rosemary Chukwuma, who took silver in the women’s 200m in 23.60s. She finished behind Ivory Coast’s Maboundou Kone, who clocked 23.36s. Chukwuma left the championships with three medals after earlier winning gold in the women’s 4x100m relay and silver in the 100m.
Nigeria’s campaign was spearheaded by world record holder Tobi Amusan, who captured gold in the women’s 100m hurdles in 12.83s. The mixed 4x400m relay team of Ezekiel Asuquo, Toheebat Jimoh, Victor Sampson and Patience Okon-George also won gold in 3:16.44, while the women’s 4x100m relay quartet added another title in 42.94s.
Silver medals came from Oyesade Olatoye in the hammer throw with 69.60m, Divine Oladipo in the discus and the men’s 4x100m relay team in 38.70s. Adaobi Tabugbo secured bronze in the women’s 100m hurdles in 13.26s, while Chidera Ezeakor added bronze in the men’s 100m after running 10.318s, rounding off a strong Nigerian showing.
