The relegation fight in the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) took a decisive turn on matchday 37 as Bayelsa United and Wikki Tourists were relegated, while several former champions remain in danger ahead of a dramatic finale.
At the Remo Stars Stadium, Remo Stars beat Bayelsa United 2-1 but could not secure safety.
Ofem Nneoyi scored in the fifth minute before Alex Oyowah equalised just before the break and Victor Mbaoma completed the turnaround after the hour. Remo must now beat Bendel Insurance away and hope rivals slip to avoid relegation.
Meanwhile, Enyimba suffered a damaging 2-0 defeat to Kwara United, with Babatunde Bright scoring in the fourth and 29th minutes. The Peoples’ Elephants sit 15th, level on points with Remo Stars and Warri Wolves, leaving four clubs at risk.
Kun Khalifat boosted survival hopes with a 2-0 win at Abia Warriors, thanks to a brace from Uchechukwu Onuoha. They host already relegated Wikki Tourists on the final day. Wikki’s fate was sealed by a 3-2 defeat to Rivers United.
Kano Pillars defeated Warri Wolves 1-0 via a late Rabiu Ali penalty, while Nasarawa United beat Plateau United 1-0. Ten teams remain mathematically unsafe going into the final round.
At the top, Rivers United staged a 3-2 comeback win over Wikki in Bauchi to stay within touching distance of leaders Enugu Rangers. Rangers beat Bendel Insurance 2-1 in Enugu, with Godwin Obaje scoring twice, including a penalty winner.
Rangers lead on 65 points, one ahead of Rivers United, setting up a final-day title showdown. Rivers host Katsina United in Port Harcourt, while Rangers travel to Lagos to face Ikorodu City, who are chasing continental qualification despite a 4-1 loss to Katsina.
Shooting Stars boosted their continental push with a 1-0 win over Barau FC. All matchday 38 fixtures will be played simultaneously as the title, continental spots and relegation battles reach a tense phase.
