Ghana: Fire outbreak rocks Government Secretarial School in Sekondi

A female nursing trainee is receiving treatment at the Effia Nkwanta Regional Hospital after suffering burn injuries in a fire that gutted parts of the female dormitory at the Government Secretarial School in Sekondi on Saturday, June 13, 2026.

The student, whose identity has not been disclosed, was among 20 trainees occupying two dormitory rooms affected by the fire.

She was rushed to the hospital after sustaining burns during the incident.

The fire broke out around 9:30 a.m., causing panic among students as flames and thick smoke spread through the upper floor of the dormitory block.

Residents quickly evacuated the building while efforts were made to ensure all occupants were safely accounted for.

The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) responded promptly, arriving at the scene within minutes and preventing the blaze from spreading to other parts of the facility.

Firefighters brought the situation under control and fully extinguished the fire by 10:25 a.m.

No deaths were recorded, but the fire caused extensive damage to students’ personal belongings, including clothing, books, bedding, electronic devices, and other valuables.

School property was also significantly affected, with preliminary estimates indicating losses worth hundreds of thousands of cedis.

Authorities have yet to determine the cause of the fire. Investigations are underway to establish what triggered the outbreak and whether any electrical, structural, or safety-related factors were involved.

The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) has confirmed the incident and is assessing the extent of the damage.

Sekondi-Takoradi NADMO Director Alhaji Abubakar Kamal described the fire as unfortunate and said efforts are underway to identify the support needed for the injured student and those who lost their belongings.
