March 31, (THEWILL) – Argentina has formally submitted a bid to host the 2023 Under-20 World Cup, after Indonesia was stripped of its hosting rights, according to FIFA President, Gianni Infantino.
The tournament is set to begin on May 20, and FIFA’s Bureau will decide whether to accept Argentina’s proposal in the coming days. Infantino praised Argentine football and expressed confidence that the country could host a competition of this level.
While other countries have expressed interest in hosting the event, Argentina is the only country to have submitted a formal offer, complete with government guarantees and other details. As THEWILL reported, Fifa revoked Indonesia’s hosting rights after the country’s football federation cancelled the draw for the tournament, following the Governor of Bali’s refusal to host the Israeli team.
Israel’s Ambassador to Argentina, Eyal Sela, expressed support for Argentina’s candidacy, saying that the country deserves to host the tournament as the reigning world champions. He also praised Argentina’s facilities and expressed hope that the country could host the 2030 World Cup as well.
