BREAKING: Lecturers Shut Enugu Federal College, Begin Two-Week Strike Over Provost’s ‘Refusal’ To Address Grievances

The document reveals that the union had previously served the college management with a clear seven-day ultimatum on Thursday, May 21, 2026, detailing “festering issues” that required urgent administrative intervention.

Academic activities at the Federal College of Education (FCE), Eha-Amufu in Enugu State are set to ground to a complete halt following a declaration of a two-week warning strike by the institution’s chapter of the Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union (COEASU).

The lecturers’ union declared the industrial action on Wednesday, June 3, 2026, following the failure of the institution’s Provost and her management team to resolve deep-seated institutional grievances, despite being given ample opportunity to avert a crisis.

The union warned that the strike action is just the first salvo, threatening a total and indefinite shutdown of the federal institution should the management fail to resolve the pending issues at the expiration of the two-week window.

According to an official union document exclusively obtained by SaharaReporters, titled “Notice Of Two Weeks Warning Strike,” the decision to withdraw services was reached during an emergency congress held by the academic staff on Tuesday, June 2, 2026.

The document reveals that the union had previously served the college management with a clear seven-day ultimatum on Thursday, May 21, 2026, detailing “festering issues” that required urgent administrative intervention.

However, the Provost was accused of treating the lecturers’ grievances with disdain and refusing to implement resolutions or engage in meaningful negotiations.

The official strike notice, which was routed through the COEASU South-East Zonal Co-ordinator to the National President in Abuja, reads in part: “Arising from Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union (COEASU), Federal College of Education, Eha-Amufu Chapter emergency congress held on Tuesday, 2nd June, 2026, the union expressed deep disappointment that the Provost and her management refused to resolve the festering issues as contained in the 7-day ultimatum written and served to the Provost on Thursday, 21st May 2026.”

The union maintained that it had fully exhausted all mandatory procedures and legal guidelines prescribed in the Labour Act relating to industrial disputes before resorting to downing tools.

Meanwhile, the COEASU leadership has constituted a task force to monitor compliance across all departments of the institution, vowing that no lecture or academic evaluation will be allowed to take place starting June 3.

“Having duly exhausted all the procedure as prescribed in the labour Act relating to industrial actions, the congress hereby declares two (2) weeks’ warning strike which commences from June 3, 2026,” the statement declared.

“The Union has set up a monitoring team to ensure strict compliance with the directive by all members of our Union as this important industrial struggle is in a bid to express our grouse in unwavering terms.”

The document was jointly signed by Comrade Chidi Nathaniel Agbo (Chairman) and Comrade Nwachukwu Simon Amadi (Secretary).

In anticipation of potential intimidation or attempts by the management to use security forces to disrupt their struggle, the union copied several high-ranking authorities.

Those officially served with the strike notice include the Minister of Education, the Chairman of the Governing Council of FCE Eha-Amufu, the institution’s Registrar, the Students’ Union Government (SUG) President, the College’s Chief Security Officer (CSO), and the Department of State Services (DSS) command in Isi-Uzo Local Government Area.
