May 04, (THEWILL) – AC Milan’s hopes of qualifying for the UEFA Champions League were dealt a blow, as they were held to a 1-1 draw by relegation-threatened Cremonese at San Siro on Wednesday.
Milan fell behind in the 77th minute when substitute David Okereke scored, but they managed to equalise in the third minute of stoppage time through Junior Messias’ free-kick, which deflected in off a Cremonese player. The result leaves Milan with an uphill task to finish in the top four, having won just two of their last nine Serie A games.
Milan started the game brightly and thought they had taken the lead through Alexis Saelemaekers in the 11th minute, but the goal was disallowed after a VAR review. Cremonese held on until halftime despite Milan’s dominance, and Okereke’s goal looked to be enough to secure a shock win.
However, Messias’ late equaliser denied Cremonese a crucial victory and earned Milan a point. The Rossoneri will need to improve quickly if they are to finish in the top four and confirm a UCL football berth for the 2023/2024 campaign.
Milan will now face Lazio in their next match, while Cremonese will take on Spezia on Saturday.
