Aston Villa end 44-year trophy drought with Europa League title

Aston Villa ended their 44-year wait for major silverware after defeating Freiburg 3-0 to win the UEFA Europa League final in Istanbul on Wednesday night.

Unai Emery’s side delivered a dominant performance at the Besiktas Stadium, outclassing the German club from start to finish to secure Villa’s first European trophy since winning the European Cup in 1982.

Goals from Youri Tielemans and Emiliano Buendia in a sensational first half laid the foundation for one of the most commanding European final displays by an English club in recent years.

Tielemans opened the scoring with a spectacular volley after meeting Morgan Rogers’ cross from a cleverly worked short corner routine. At the same time, Buendia doubled the lead moments later with a brilliant curling strike from the edge of the box into the top corner.

Villa fans, who had waited 44 years to witness another European final, erupted in celebration both inside the stadium and back home in Birmingham.

The triumph also cemented Emery’s remarkable reputation in European competitions, with the Spanish manager now winning the Europa League trophy for a record fifth time.

Having previously lifted the title four times, Emery further strengthened his legacy as one of Europe’s most successful knockout competition managers.

“This is something fantastic,” Emery told TNT Sports after the match.

“We played in a very serious way this year, so focused. I told the players we needed desire in this competition and to show on the pitch that we were the protagonists, and they did it.

“This final is confirmation of how we are progressing.”

The victory marks a defining moment in Villa’s modern resurgence under Emery, who has transformed the club into a major force again both domestically and in Europe.
