ASUU Kano Varsity Rejects New Governing Document

Urge Members To Abstain From It

The Academic Staff Union (ASUU), Kano University of Science and Technology (KUST), Wudil, has condemned the illegal review of the Governing Document and the attempt to impose it on members.

The Union, reject the documents in their totality due to the failure of the University administration to comply with the laid-down procedures of amending the document as enshrined in Section 21 of the KUST Amendment Law 2017.

The Chairman and his Secretary, ASUU Wudil branch, Dr Aliyu Yusuf Ahmad, and Dr Abubakar Ibrahim Tukur, instructed members in a Communique on Monday after a Meeting, to abstain from recognising or using any of the said documents.

They further requested the approval of the National Executive Council of the Union for active Non-Compliance until the issue among other demands of the branch is resolved by the University Administration.

He reminded them that they have consistently demonstrated commitment to industrial harmony and academic stability in the University, adding that this position has been strengthened by the efforts of the Kano State Government in improving staff welfare and promoting the higher education sector in the state.

“However, Congress observed with dismay the action of the University administration to impose the new governing documents on members that are harmful and injurious to the development of the University.

The Union notes that the documents were mischievously approved without duly engaging stakeholders and without following due process laid down by section 21 of the Kano University of Science and Technology, (KUST) Amendment Law 2017, and other local and international labour laws/conventions.

Congress further observed that the University Governing Council that approved the new document was not properly constituted in accordance with Statute 5, section 1 of the KUST Amendment Law 2017 due to the failure of the University Administration to summon a senate meeting for the election of a senate representative to the council.

“This is in addition to · other flagrant violations of the provisions of the University Law such as refusal to release audited accounts of the University for over three years, holding regular statutory meetings such as University senate and budget monitoring committee among others too numerous to mention.”
