Netherlands recorded their first win in the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a 5-1 win over Sweden in a Group F match.
The Oranje side, led by Brian Brobbey, recovered from the draw against Japan in their first match to send a message to doubters on their World Cup pedigree. The Sunderland forward scored twice early in the match, and Cody Gakpo also added a brace.
Crysencio Summerville rounded up the scoring for the Dutch after Anthony Elanga gave Sweden false hope with the consolation, the Swedes suffering defeat with the exact scoreline of victory in their first match.
Brobbey slotted home Gakpo’s low cross on five minutes before making it two-nil with a similar close range finish from Denzel Dumfries’ cross. Ronald Koeman’s side were relentless in attack against a sleepy Sweden side, Gakpo getting on the scoresheet two minutes after the restart, and sealed his brace with a near post finish for four-nil with the 100th goal scored so far in the World Cup so.
Substitute Elanga gave Sweden brief reprieve with a well-taken strike after running behind the Netherlands’ defence-splitting pass from Alexander Isak, but Summerville ensured Netherlands have the last say in the match with a late strike into the bottom corner from veteran Memphis Depay’s assist.
The Netherlands have gone 14 straight World Cup matches without a loss in regular or extra time in the World Cup, while Sweden concede five goals in the World Cup for the fifth time, but the first in 68 years. Netherlands moved to the top of the group with four points, while Sweden remain in contention to qualify with three points from two matches.
