Ghana’s 1-0 victory over Panama at the 2026 FIFA World Cup was not only significant for the three points secured in Group L, but it also marked the end of a defensive record that had lingered for more than a decade.
The Black Stars kept their first clean sheet at a FIFA World Cup since their 1-0 win over Serbia on June 13, 2010, ending a run of 10 consecutive World Cup matches in which they had conceded at least one goal.
The achievement highlighted Ghana’s disciplined performance at BMO Field in Toronto, where Carlos Queiroz’s side showed resilience and organisation to frustrate Panama throughout the match.
While Caleb Yirenkyi’s dramatic stoppage-time goal earned the victory, the team’s defensive effort proved equally important.
Ghana’s backline, made up of Marvin Senaya, Jonas Adjetey, Jerome Opoku and Gideon Mensah, delivered a composed display against a Panama side that looked dangerous on several occasions.
Goalkeeper Benjamin Asare also played a crucial role, producing a vital save in the 78th minute to deny Ismael Díaz and keep the score level.
The clean sheet brought an end to a streak that stretched across four World Cup tournaments. Since the victory over Serbia in South Africa in 2010, Ghana had conceded in every World Cup match, including games against Australia, Germany, Portugal, the United States, South Korea and Uruguay.
For head coach Carlos Queiroz, the defensive solidity was one of the most encouraging aspects of the performance. After the match, the Portuguese tactician praised his players for their discipline and willingness to follow the team’s tactical plan.
