Former vice presidential candidate, Datti Baba-Ahmed has stated that he did not defect to the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) to get a presidential ticket.
Datti stated this while announcing his defection on Monday at the party’s national secretariat, where he formally addressed party leaders, supporters and members of the press.
He explained that his decision to join the PRP was both ideological and strategic, noting that the country is facing unprecedented political and economic pressures.
Datti said leadership remains too critical to be left unattended, insisting that Nigeria’s current challenges stem largely from the withdrawal of capable individuals from active politics.
According to him, recent years have witnessed systematic weakening of opposition parties, adding that only a resilient platform like the PRP can withstand such pressures and offer Nigerians a credible alternative.
Datti further declared that the party is positioning itself to win elections at all levels in 2027, stressing that Nigerians must resist any attempt to undermine electoral integrity.
“I didn’t come here to get a presidential ticket. I came here to fix Nigeria. If supporting someone achieves that, so be it. If contesting achieves that, so be it,” he added.
Earlier, the national chairman of the PRP, Dr. Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, formally welcomed Datti into the party, describing his defection as a significant boost to the party’s vision of providing an alternative leadership for Nigeria.
