“Nobody prospers by giving, when you give, you lack” — Pastor Abel Damina

“Nobody prospers by giving, when you give, you lack” — Pastor Abel Damina

A prominent Nigerian cleric, Abel Damina, has sparked fresh debate after questioning the widely held belief that giving to the church guarantees financial prosperity.

The founder of Power City International made the remarks in a viral video, where he argued that there is no biblical backing for the idea that offerings or tithes automatically lead to wealth.

Questions over prosperity teachings
In his message, Damina criticised teachings that encourage Christians to give with the expectation of becoming rich. He warned that such beliefs could mislead worshippers and create false hope about financial success.

“There’s no scripture in the Bible that says when you give to God, you’ll be a rich person. There’s no such scripture. Nobody prospers by giving. When you give, you lack,” he said.

According to him, giving reduces one’s resources in the short term, and recovery depends on personal effort rather than divine guarantees tied to donations.

Personal story cited
To illustrate his point, the cleric shared the story of a man who allegedly donated all three of his cars to his church, expecting divine financial rewards. However, the man later struggled and considered retrieving one of the vehicles.

“Somebody told me he gave his church all three of his cars, and he has been trekking since then till when I met him… I said, I think so too,” Damina recounted.

Wealth tied to effort, not offerings
The pastor maintained that financial success is driven by education, hard work, and business activities rather than religious giving. He dismissed claims that tithing alone can make individuals billionaires.

“I never saw anybody who, because he tithed, became a billionaire… it’s because they had jobs and businesses,” he said.

Damina further explained that natural resources and opportunities already exist, but individuals must acquire knowledge and skills to turn them into wealth.

He added that going to school, engaging in trade, and applying effort are the real pathways to financial growth, not relying solely on religious contributions.
